Volunteers sought for annual Big Event

Since 2006, more than 37,500 students, faculty and staff at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln have completed 1,687,500 volunteer hours through The Big Event, an annual single day of service benefiting local nonprofits and the Lincoln community.

The 2022 Big Event is April 23. A minimum of 500 Huskers are needed to help the 35 nonprofits and 60 private residences who submitted projects to be completed.

Individual Huskers (faculty, staff and students), student clubs/organizations, departments and units can sign up until April 8 to participate. Volunteers will be notified of their project assignments between April 11-15.

Service projects will include assisting residents at a private properties and residences; cleaning up at local parks; and volunteering at nonprofit organizations.

Every volunteer with receive a Big Event T-shirt and can participate in a networking brunch at the start of the day. The event is organized by the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska. Send email to bigevent.unl@gmail.com for more information.

Typical schedule for The Big Event

  • 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. | Group leaders arrive at Nebraska Union Memorial Plaza to check in and collect tools for their assignments.
  • 11 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. | Networking brunch for all volunteers at Nebraska Union Memorial Plaza.
  • Noon to 3:30 p.m. | Students complete volunteer projects at various job sites.
  • 4 to 6 p.m. | Group leaders return tools & materials to Nebraska Union Memorial Plaza.
