University of Nebraska-Lincoln students will host a Black Lives Matter rally Oct. 21 to raise awareness of issues of race and to continue an open, honest dialogue about race and diversity issues on campus and in the community.

A series of speakers will address attendees of the rally, which is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. at the green space north of Nebraska Union Plaza. Topics speakers expect to discuss include racial profiling, police relations, kneeling during the national anthem during sporting events, and compassion for everyone.

It will be the campus’ second Black Lives Matter rally. In November 2015, about 400 students, faculty, staff and community members attended the inaugural event. In February, then-Chancellor Harvey Perlman responded to the suggestions made at the rally.

“We have made progress at the university, but there is a lot of work that still needs to be done,” said Brianna Ridenour, a junior management major at Nebraska and an event organizer. “We hope to peacefully and positively highlight the work ahead and build on that progress.”
