‘Seventh Fire’ director to attend Ross screening

Still from director Jack Riccobono's new film, "The Seventh Fire," which opens Sept. 23 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Riccobono will attend the 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 screening of the film and participate in a question and answer session with the audience.

Three new films – “The Seventh Fire,” “Eva Hesse” and “The Hollars” – are opening at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center on Sept. 23.

Directed by Jack Riccobono, “The Seventh Fire” tells the story of Rob Brown, a Native American gang leader on a remote Minnesota reservation. He has been sentenced to prison for the fifth time and must confront his role in bringing violent drug culture into his beloved Ojibwe community. As Brown reckons with his past, his 17-year-old protégé, Kevin, dreams of the future – becoming the biggest drug dealer on the reservation.

Riccobono will attend the 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 screening of the film and participate in a question and answer session with the audience.

“The Seventh Fire” is not rated and shows through Sept. 29.

The documentary “Eva Hesse” serves as a valuable primer about the artist’s life and legacy. Hesse (1936-1970) is one of America’s foremost postwar artists. Her pioneering sculptures – using latex, fiberglass and plastics – helped establish the post-minimalist movement. Dying of a brain tumor at age 34, she had a mere decade-long career that is dense with complex, intriguing works. The documentary is the first feature-length appreciation of Hesse’s life and work.

“Eva Hesse” is not rated and will be showing through Sept. 29.

John Krasinski’s second film as actor-director, “The Hollars,” tells the story of a struggling New York City artist who is forced to head home to visit his sick mother. Back in the house he grew up in, John Hollar is immediately swept up in the problems of his dysfunctional family, high school rival and an over-eager ex-girlfriend as he faces impending fatherhood with his girlfriend in New York. Krasiniski’s second feature is a poignant look at the bonds of family and friendship.

“The Hollars” is rated PG-13 and will be showing through Sept. 29.
