“Neruda” is opening March 3 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. “The Red Turtle” is continuing through March 9.

Pablo Larraín’s “Nueruda,” which is rated R for sexuality, nudity and some language, transcends the typical biographical film and focuses on the life of the character.

Beloved poet Pablo Neruda, played by Luis Gnecco, is also the most famous communist in post-WWII Chile. When the political tides shift, he is forced underground, with a tenacious police inspector, played by Gael García Bernal, hot on his trail.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the legend of the poet hounded by the policeman grows, and artists led by Pablo Picasso clamor for Neruda’s freedom. Neruda, however, sees the struggle with his police inspector nemesis as an opportunity to reinvent himself. He cunningly plays cat-and-mouse with the inspector.

In this story of a persecuted poet and his obsessive adversary, Neruda recognizes his own heroic possibilities: a chance to become a symbol for liberty, as well as a literary legend.

“The Red Turtle,” rated PG, is continuing at the Ross through March 9.

Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli explores a new creative direction in “The Red Turtle,” creating a realistically drawn feature with Dutch animator Michaël Dudok de Wit. Told without dialogue, the story follows the travails of a shipwrecked man who establishes a family and a new life on an island inhabited only by majestic animal life
