“Les Misérables,” the world’s most popular musical, is coming to Nebraska’s Lied Center for Performing Arts.

The production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s Tony Award-winning musical opens Jan. 9 with a six-day, eight-show run.

Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the same name, “Les Misérables” is set in early 19th-century France and tells the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant. Released after serving 19 years in jail, Valjean opts to beak parole and start a new life. Though pursued by an inspector, Valjean is swept up into a revolutionary period in France.

The award-winning score includes songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “One Day More,” and “Master of the House.” The musical has seen by more than 130 million people worldwide, stopping in 53 countries and presented in 22 languages.

The Lied is offering discounted tickets to faculty and staff for the 7:30 p.m. Jan. 9 opening night showing. The tickets, available for $49, can be purchased through the Lied Center website by using the code UNLSTAFF23.
