It was a memorable day for University of Nebraska-Lincoln seniors Shayne Arriola and Laura Springer, both of Grand Island. First, they became homecoming king and queen; then they became fiancé and fiancée.

After being crowned on the field at Memorial Stadium during halftime of the Sept. 23 Nebraska-Rutgers football game, Arriola surprised his girlfriend of three and a half years by dropping to a knee to propose in front of the sell-out crowd. Springer said “yes.” The two met in high school at Grand Island Northwest.

Arriola and Springer were elected homecoming royalty in an online vote of the student body on Sept. 21.

Arriola is a marketing major with minors in psychology and economics. He is in the Center for Sales Excellence program in the College of Business. He is president of the Interfraternity Council and the Nebraska Union Board and is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, the Student Alumni Association and Mortar Board. He is the son of Lori Arriola.

Springer is a history, communication studies and political science major who is pre-law. She is president of the Student Alumni Association, the Order of Omega Honor Society and Club Softball. She is also a member of Kappa Delta sorority, the Omicron Delta Kappa Senior Honor Society and the University Honors Program. She is the daughter of Daniel and Susan Springer.
