‘Future of American Art’ is topic of March 30 talk
Stuart Embury and Wendy Katz will lead a discussion on “The Future of American Art — As Imagined in 1886” at 5:30 p.m. March 30 in Love Library’s Peterson Room.
Embury and Katz will discuss art critic Sylvester Koehler’s efforts to define American art from the Gilded Age, a time period when most collectors preferred European painting. The talk will feature Koehler’s three books promoting American artists, which include elaborately produced original etchings.
Katz is a professor of art history in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Embury, a doctor from Holdrege, Nebraska, and 1966 University of Nebraska graduate, has amassed what is considered one of the top private book collections on American art in the United States. Embury donated more than 11,000 art books and exhibition catalogues to the university in 2010. The Stuart P. Embury MD Library of American Art is housed in the University Archives and Special Collections in Love Library.
