A bonus aspect to any garden is attracting birds and wildlife. There are plants and features that you can add to your garden to make it particularly inviting to birds.

Two local bird enthusiasts will talk about “Birds in the Garden” at a free lecture starting at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Nebraska Union Auditorium, 1400 R St., at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Dave Titterington and Dan Wheeler will talk about birds that typically can be found in the Lincoln area and how to create welcoming spaces for birds through types of plants, plant placement, water features and other garden techniques.

Titterington is founder of the Wild Bird Habitat Stores, a family owned and operated business that opened in 1993. Today Wild Bird Habitat has two locations in Lincoln specializing in backyard bird feeding, bird conservation, environmental education and outdoor birding recreation. He is well known in the area as a birder extraordinaire.

Wheeler is professor emeritus and former chair of the university’s agricultural leadership, education and communications department. For the past five years, he and Titterington have co-taught a six-week birding class for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

This lecture, sponsored by UNL Garden Friends, is free and open to the public. A reception follows the lecture.
