Davis’ ‘Arch Hotel’ focus of Sheldon talk
Art critic and curator Karen Wilkin will present a lecture on Stuart Davis’s painting “Arch Hotel” at 6 p.m. April 11 at Sheldon Museum of Art. The lecture is free and open to the public.
“Arch Hotel” was acquired by Sheldon in 1947. The painting captures 1920’s Paris through the eyes of Davis, who lived there during that time and depicted the city in a series of inventive paintings.
In her talk, Wilkin will trace Davis’s interpretation of the Paris streetscape and the journey of his paintings after his return to the United States.
Wilkin has dedicated much of her career to exhibiting and publishing works on Davis’s paintings. She contributes regularly to the Wall Street Journal, Hudson Review and The New Criterion and teaches at the New York Studio School.
