The Glenn Korff School of Music’s dance program presents their annual Evenings of Dance Concert, April 11-14 in the Lied Center for Performing Arts’ Johnny Carson Theater.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. April 11-13 and 2 p.m. April 14. Tickets are $12 general and $7 for students/youth and are available online. The April 11 performance will be live webcast.

The spring 2024 Evenings of Dance concert features several guest artist pieces, including Paul Besaw’s “Camp, Dance, Tramp,” and work from Gloria Flores and Archer Porter.

Flores is a visiting assistant professor in Spanish and is also teaching the dance program’s first in-person hip hop course. More than 45 students enrolled in the class. Flores has choreographed a hip hop piece, “Quintessential Paradox,” for the concert, drawing on her backgrounds in jazz, modern dance and hip hop.

In addition, Flores, along with Katie Marya, a dancer, poet and associate director of the writing program in the Department of English, and César García, a sound artist and musician originally from Mexico City, have made a fully original piece, “A Woman in the Drum Forest.” It features new choreography by Flores, poetry by Marya and an original score played live by García.

Also joining the dance program this semester is Porter, who is teaching the intermediate modern course and also teaches in the emerging media arts program. She is interested in dance film and has created a piece titled “Domicile” that will play behind the live dancers, who are in the film as well.

Susan Ourada, associate professor of dance, is choreographing the senior dance ensemble for the 12th year. The piece, “You Wanna Pizza Me?,” features themes with a lighthearted Italian flair with Dean Martin singing.

The concert also includes three student works that were featured at the American College Dance Association regional conference this spring at St. Olaf College. The student works are by junior Katie Charest and seniors Abby Brady and Mariela Hernandez.

The concert includes lighting design by students in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, with assistance from Michelle Harvey, assistant professor.

Dance alumnae Shelley Bracken Fritz, Kari Swanson Neth and Cary Twomey will host a post-performance “Meet and Greet” following the April 13 performance at Screamers Dining Cabaret, 803 Q St. For more information, send email to unldancealumni@gmail.com.
