Cerveny to step down as dean, become special adviser

Alan Cerveny

Chancellor Harvey Perlman has announced that Alan Cerveny will resign his position as the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Dean of Enrollment Management and become a special adviser to the chancellor for recruitment and enrollment issues.

Perlman informed faculty and staff in an all-campus e-mail on June 8. Cerveny, who was been at UNL since 2003, will begin his new role July 1. He will serve until June 30, 2016, the same day Perlman has said he will step down as chancellor.

“It’s tempting to say that Alan’s impact on the university has been incalculable. But considering the nature of his work, it definitely is,” Perlman wrote. “In his 13 years guiding UNL’s enrollment efforts, Alan has remade our enrollment processes and enhanced our undergraduate recruitment strengths. He and his colleagues have spearheaded increases that culminated in UNL’s enrollment passing 25,000 students last fall, fueled by the second-largest freshman class in the history of the university.”

Amy Goodburn, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, will serve as interim director of enrollment management as the search for a permanent successor to Cerveny begins, Perlman said.

Prior to coming to UNL, Cerveny was the director of admissions and scholarships at the University of Kansas (1996-2002) and the director of admissions (1987-1991) and associate vice president for student affairs (1991-1996) at James Madison University in Virginia. He began his career as an assistant director of admissions at UNL in 1980 and served as the office’s acting director (1985-1987).

Cerveny is a native Nebraskan who grew up on a small farm outside Fairbury. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UNL.
